MELCOR®
From legacy to today, the MELCOR ELECTRONICS CORPORATION , launched the 1731 OP-AMP, circa 1966, used in mic preamps, line amps, active and passive equalizers, and FM radio station mixing desks. In addition, MELCOR® provided military (mil-spec) gear to the US Navy. Because of this relationship, when the late 1960’s cried for multichannel desks for the emeging rock generation, Saul Walker left MELCOR ELECTRONICS CORPORATION, to start API “ Studio Systems “ , and MELCOR® concentrated on government and military contracts. Thus begins API Studio Systems, Automated Processes Inc. The same team that designed the MELCOR® 1731 OP-AMP would go on to design the API 2520. Besides the op-amp, MELCOR®’s CL-20 model compressor/limiter evolved into the API 525 limiter. The MELCOR® 2-band GME-20 equalizer would become the API 550 equalizer and the MELCOR® AML27 pre-amplifier card would become the legendary API 312 preamp.
In June 2019, stewardship of the genuine MELCOR, MELCOR ELECTRONICS CORPORATION , aka M.E.C., was acquired by the Tom Hilbe Equipment Company, LLC , and for its first order of business, the “ GENUINE MELCOR ” 1731 OP-AMP was put back into production, as well as modern classic MELCOR mic preamp and modeled MELCOR® op-amp plugins.
